Wealth and Happiness

This post does not relate to PR, social media or career. It does not give any definite answers, it only raises questions we should be thinking about.

When contemplating the past year, I stopped and thought about one paradox of human life. I deem the first day of the new year as the most fitting opportunity to share it with you.

We already have more than we need, yet we want more than we have.

Here comes the explanation. Most of us have more material wealth than we truly need for our survival. Everyone could be just satisfied and stop pursuing the quest for money but nobody actually does it. The question is why do we desire more than we have got and why aren’t we satisfied with the status quo?

The heuristic answer is “We are greedy by nature and that’s what pushes us forward.” Gordon Gekko has articulated this in his famous address.

The people are getting obsessed with increasing their net worth at the expense of their quality of life. It has been proven that wealth does not constitute happiness. Quite on the contrary, sometimes the rich people struggle the most when it comes to life satisfaction.

The businessmen, media and politicians are firing on all cylinders to persuade us that greed is good and that we should structure our lives around this maxim. Pursuing our self-interest has become the dominant ideology of the day. I am certain that most of us have been first captivated and later consumed by that set of dogmas for better or worse.

I wish more of you would think about the dichotomy of wealth and happiness before you make a significant choice in your life.
