Unaware, Unprepared, Unemployed
It all started with a few articles in Hospodarske noviny, a Czech equivalent of WSJ. The daily ran an article on negative effects of recession impacting students and graduates. Part of which was a grim forecast for the coming year 2010. Subsequently, Erik Best published a critique of Czech society in his fleet sheet’s final word.
The message of both articles is clear. The graduates haven’t acquired necessary skill sets, while they were in school. That implies two interpretations.
- Czech education is in a dire need of reform.
- The graduates were not motivated enough to develop their career while studying.
Erik’s criticism raises more questions about the social reality Czechs live in but that is outside of the scope of this post.
The Czech students need to be aware of the necessity to work on their careers NOT AFTER but DURING their studies. Very few companies bothered to tell them this and the government and the media follow suit. Nobody talks about how to advance one’s career while being a student.
The mainstream media often state the facts and analyze the issues connected to education. They contribute very little to solving the problem of inadequate skill sets among the young graduates. They could do much better, though. It is in our public interest to have employed grads. It benefits the society economically, socially and culturally.
Dear journalists, companies and public officials, start eradicating this information vacuum!
